Spectrum management & monitoring

Detecting to protect a critical resource

In a progressively connected world with a growing demand for frequency bandwidth and its commercial value, the electromagnetic spectrum has become a critical resource. Considered a national asset for technological advancement and economic growth, governments and their communications regulatory authorities focus on monitoring and managing this resource to maximize its benefit and prevent misuse and pollution of the spectrum.

HENSOLDT South Africa’s GEW business unit (previously GEW Technologies), offers spectrum management and monitoring solutions to address the evolving challenges of the ICT sector, from standalone products and single stations, to regional and nationwide strategic systems. Meeting the specific needs of clients and their unique operating environments, HENSOLDT’s scalable and modular systems are custom-designed to optimally blend the use of large fixed stations, agile mobile systems and smart sensors.

Building on 50 years of expertise in specialised electronics and a track-record of more than 20 years in spectrum monitoring, HENSOLDT has successfully delivered bespoke solutions to clients across the world and recently won a contract for a nationwide strategic system in the region. In the Middle East, we proudly build on a history of more than two decades as a reputable supplier and a partner for in-country support and maintena.

SkyManager spectrum management solution

HENSOLDT’s SkyManager system automates the spectrum management environment, combining middleware and various user interfaces into a comprehensive software ecosystem with sophisticated management tools.

The system’s workflows allow for the automation of complex spectrum management tasks, reducing unnecessary risk or delays in the licencing process and offers a user-friendly experience for system operators and their licence applicants. SkyManager simplifies and optimises frequency licence management, frequency occupancy analysis, frequency allocation management, fee-calculation and ensures data integrity.

SkyManager combines a host of technical tools and integrates seamlessly with spectrum monitoring sensor systems. GEW actively participates on various ITU forums to form part of the worldwide conversation around ICT and to develop the technical bases for decisions taken at World Radio Communication Conferences. GEW is an associate member of the International Telecommunication Union in both the Radio Communication Sector (ITU-R) and Development Sector (ITU-D).

Fixed monitoring & DF systems

GEW designs, manufactures and delivers ITU compliant Fixed Monitoring Stations (FMS) which could include both Direction Finding and Monitoring capabilities in the frequency range of 9 kHz to 9 GHz. Such stations may be manned or unmanned and can be controlled from a Control Centre via the SkyMon-CC software suite.

Fixed Stations with Monitoring Capability: In this case the Sky-i7000 Monitoring receiver would be used with suitable antenna set.

Fixed Stations with Direction Finding and Monitoring Capabilities: In this case the Skylark7050C Direction Finder with Monitoring Receiver channel would be used with a suitable antenna set.

Mobile applications

GEW designs, manufactures and delivers ITU compliant Mobile Monitoring Stations (MMS) which could cover the frequency range of 9 kHz to 9 GHz.

Depending on space constraints either the Skylark7050C or the SkyScan2 Direction Finder with monitoring channel would be used as the core equipment for a MMS. This equipment may be built into suitable vehicles which may also include a mast for greater coverage.

MMS stations may be controlled by local operators or from a Control Centre via a suitable communications link and the SkyMon-CC software suite.
